Stay Well This Winter
Peterborough Grant Scheme
This year Peterborough City Council and local partners are supporting the NHS England and Public Health England campaign, Stay Well This Winter that helps people prepare for winter and ward off common winter illnesses.
Cold winter weather can affect health. Most recent data that covers the 2015/16 winter period shows that there were over 23,000 excess winter deaths in England – with 71 recorded in Peterborough alone. Winter conditions are associated with an increase in injuries and illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia. It can be particularly harmful to those that are older, under the age of five or have a long-term health condition such as heart, lung and kidney problems. For a number of years Peterborough City Council has worked with partners from the statutory and non-statutory sectors along with communities to reduce the impact of winter cold weather upon health through the provision of information and support.
Support through Fuel Grants
This year Peterborough City Council has allocated funds to be used as grants to help with heating bills. Vulnerable individuals/families living in Peterborough and facing fuel poverty can get a grant to contribute towards future heating costs. A fixed level of funding is being made available to provide approximately 150 grants during the 2017/18 winter period.
